Sabreman, star of Sabre Wulf and Underwurlde, has been cursed by a wizard and now undergoes a distressing transformation into a werewolf every night. Now he must find the ingredients for a magic potion that will cure him before it's too late...

Gameplay Knight Lore screenshot

Sabreman's task of creating the potion is not easy (to say the least); he is trapped within the castle of the mad wizard Melkhior, who has set numerous traps to make life difficult for visitors. Around the castle are scattered several charms which Sabreman must collect and deposit in the cauldron at the heart of the labyrinth. The type of charm needed is shown appearing and disappearing above the cauldron.

In many of the rooms are hostile guards and magical creatures which will kill Sabreman if they touch him. There are also many unpleasant traps, such as disappearing stone blocks, mines, poisoned spikes and so on. Some of the blocks move around by magical means and can be used by Sabreman to transport himself around certain rooms. There are bonuses lying around, such as extra lives, which will make your task a little easier if you collect them. However, all this will be for nothing if you do not create the potion within the time limit - Sabreman has forty days and forty nights in which to succeed, otherwise he will remain a werewolf forever.

RATING: 94% (CRASH #12, January 1985)
COMMENTS: "An outstanding game."

One of the most influential games to appear on any computer, this was the first true isometric 3D game; it has established a genre which is as strong as ever - for example, Origin's latest game, ULTIMA VIII, looks remarkably like a 1990s version of KNIGHT LORE. It's still a fun (although difficult) game to play.

Hints

The game Knightlore is set in a dark castle where you, the sabreman have to rid yourself from the curse of the werewolf. The only way to do this is to find 6 objects and drop them into the wizard's cauldron to create a remedy. The games gimmic, and arguably it's selling point, was it's forced 3D isometric perspective that gave the rooms a more realistic look.

The inlay card doesn't actually HAVE any instructions, just lots of riddles. As with all Ultimate games, the user had to use his brain to work out what to do. The object of the game is for you to first find the wizard of the castle and enter the room he is in when you are in your sabreman form. Out of the cauldron an item will appear. Your mission is to then hunt out this object and place it into the cauldron. Once this has been done, another object that you will have to search out and return will appear. Once you have done this 6 times you will have ridden the werewolf's curse from your body. Be quick! You only have 40 days and nights to complete the spell.

Unluckily only the startup screen is in colour, the game itself is black&white.
