Timex Computer 2048 Timex Portugal The TC2048 is a clone of the ZX Spectrum 48k. It has been produced in Portugal around 1984 by the Portugeese department of Timex after Timex Computer in USA folded. It was sold in Portugal and Poland. From hardware point of view it is compatible with Spectrum, the main difference is that instead of ULA there is another chip, SCLD. Besides all the ULA functions SCLD is able to work in some other video modes. Unlike Spectrum in TIMEX port #FE is fully decoded, what in rare cases is causing incompatibility. The other hardware difference is joy- stick port (Kempston) built in TIMEX. ROM code is the same as in Spectrum except one OUT instruction setting proper video mode after reset. The Keyboard has a PCB instead of a plastic membrane. Connectors: Composite video TV - PAL Joystick - Kempston Ear + Mic System bus - ZX Spectrum Power - ZX Spectrum (?) hollow plug schematics were downloaded from http://8bit.yarek.pl Most ZX Spectrum games run on a Timex TC 2048. Few exhibit some strange behaviour or crash, e.g. • Uridium is unplayable because player can't control his spaceship. • Arkanoid • Top Gun • Skateboard Construction System (when you start playing it crashes.) (PopoCop@WoS) All games which didn't work on an ZX Spectrum issue 3 or later also do not work on a TC 2048, e.g. the original versions of • Arkanoid • Abu-Simbel Profanation • Rasputin etc. (Black_Cat@WoS)
